Sealants
You brush twice daily. You floss daily. And you rinse as best you can. Sometimes brushing, flossing and rinsing just isn’t enough. Everyone has those hard-to-reach spots in their mouth that can't be cleaned with conventional oral maintenance. This can lead to tooth decay in those missed areas. Using sealants on your teeth, however, can provide an extra line of defense against tooth decay.
At Centra Dental, our dental team is able to assess your teeth during your regularly scheduled checkups. These checkups will allow us to see certain problems in your teeth, or determine whether problems could occur due to the structure of incisors and molars. Sometimes molars grow with various indentions that create real difficulties to remove plaque and food particles. This is where sealants for your teeth can be extremely helpful in both the short-term and the long-term because it will help keep cavities from forming, and therefore alleviate the need for costly dental procedures, like dental crowns, dental implants, and root canals.
What Is a Dental Sealant?
A dental sealant is a plastic resin that bonds to the deep grooves in your tooth's chewing surface. When sealing a tooth, the grooves of your teeth are filled with the resin, which creates a smooth surface on the tooth. This helps to safeguard against harmful plaque from damaging your teeth. Sealants typically last from 3 to 5 years.
Depending on how your teeth are formed, you may need to undergo sealant treatment. Since these sealants don’t last forever, scheduling a dental checkup every six months is very important to analyze the health of your teeth.
