  • Adults Can Benefit From Houston Braces, Too

When most people think of Houston braces–either Invisalign, ceramic dental braces, or metal dental braces–they associate these appliances with kids and teenagers. However, adults are also able to wear Houston braces, and we even encourage it! In this article, we’ll explain why adults should get Houston braces and how our different options can help different cases.

If Children Don’t Get Houston Braces, They Keep Their Malocclusion In Adulthood

A “malocclusion” is the technical term for a bad bite, such as an overbite, underbite, and even crowding teeth. However, just because Houston braces are seen as a cosmetic dental treatment, doesn't mean their purpose is exclusive to cosmetics. Malocclusions are genuine medical conditions that can lead to other problems such as migraines, tooth decay, gum disease, lisp, and difficulty chewing and digesting food. It is imperative that you get the alignment of your teeth corrected if you suffer from the aforementioned conditions.

Our Houston Braces Can Correct A Bad Bite And Promote Healthy Teeth

Because our Houston family dentist treats families in Houston and South Houston, we offer three different types of dental braces treatments in order to cater to every family member’s needs as best as possible. Our Houston braces options include:

    Invisalign Clear Aligners

Invisalign Clear Aligners are clear trays that vary slightly in shape over the course of your treatment in order to guide your teeth to the correct alignment. We favor Invisalign for mild cases, as they would get the job done in a timely manner. Learn more about South Houston Invisalign here.

    Metal Houston Braces

Metal Houston braces have been available since the 19th century with significant updates since then. Today, they are far more lightweight and comfortable and continue to be the traditional braces treatment that we recommend, as they are the most versatile. If you would like to learn more about metal Houston braces at our South Houston family dentist office, read this article.

    Ceramic Dental Braces

Our ceramic South Houston braces are designed to blend in with the natural color of your teeth. This type of Houston braces treatment is efficient in treating moderate cases. Though ceramic braces are somewhat similar to metal braces, there are a few differences between ceramic and metal braces.

  • All You Need to Know About Dental Benefits at Centra Dental in South Houston

Most people receive dental benefits through their employers, but it may be confusing to some. Here is all that you need to know about your dental insurance and the benefits that come with it.

Dental Insurance is a Necessary Expense

You cannot obtain dental insurance unless both you and your employer pay a substantial premium upfront. However, this premium is what gets you the many benefits you can take advantage of during the year. Without dental insurance and its benefits, you put your teeth at risk of severe damage and/or rot. Additionally, many of the earliest signs of illness and disease first appear in the mouth, so it's crucial that our family dentists see you regularly.

Dental Benefits Will Expire by the End of the Year

There is one condition, though. If you haven’t used your benefits before December 31st, then you will lose those benefits. Keep in mind that If you do not use them by the time the year is over, there is no carry-over, meaning you are unable to reserve multiple treatments for the next year when both your insurance and premium reset.

How Do Your South Houston Dental Benefits Work?

Because the premium is paid upfront before you obtain dental insurance, the money invested is completely wasted if you don’t take the time to visit the dentist enough throughout the year.

There are multiple kinds of dental insurance plans, each with their own benefits. Benefits are what we refer to as coverage offered by your insurance for different dental procedures and treatments, meaning your insurance will pay a portion of the services you seek from our South Houston dentist office. Most plans offer substantial or complete coverage for routine teeth cleanings every 6 months, which serves as the perfect incentive to get the preventative care you need to achieve the healthy smile you deserve. Other benefits may come in the form of coverage for root canals, x-rays, dental caps/crowns, and possibly dentures or dental bridges, since these are restorative procedures that protect the rest of your teeth.

Centra Dental in South Houston Wants Your Family to Have Healthy Smiles

Although it may seem early in the year, it’s never too early for your entire family to have healthy teeth. Now is a great time to start planning and scheduling necessary treatments with our South Houston family dentist. This way we can help ensure you get the most out of your allotted benefits early on, so you aren’t scrambling at the last minute during the busy holidays. Because we want you to take the best care of your teeth, we are in-network with several insurance plans, including Aetna, Cigna, Delta, Guardian, United, and much more. If you have an outstanding treatment or teeth cleaning, please book an appointment with us so we can see you before the end of the year.

    Metal Braces

Traditional metal braces have been around for decades because they are effective in correcting misaligned teeth. Steel brackets are cemented onto the teeth and linked with a thin wire. Metal dental braces are the most common choice for children and teens.

    • Pros – Puts the strongest pressure on teeth compared to other types, making them the most effective for severe cases. Metal braces are highly durable and the cheaper option.
    • Cons – They are the most visible and easily noticeable in public and in pictures. The steel material can cause discomfort in the inside of the cheeks but is addressable using dental wax. Metal braces may be harder to clean than the other types.

    Ceramic Braces

More and more adults are choosing the ceramic type for their Houston dental braces. Ceramic Houston braces are translucent in color, making them less obvious than metal ones. However, they’re not recommended for very young patients because they are less durable, and kids may easily damage them.

    • Pros – More effective than Invisalign in addressing serious dental issues. Ceramic braces are more comfortable because there are no wires. They resemble the natural color of teeth, so they are less noticeable.
    • Cons – More expensive than traditional braces. They move teeth more slowly and may not be recommended for extremely crooked teeth.

    Invisalign

The latest type of Houston braces to be invented is Invisalign. This type is very popular among adults because they can barely be seen and they are removable. Invisalign resembles mouth guards and are custom-made for you. They are considered as clear aligners, which you can remove when eating, taking pictures, attending events, etc.

    • Pros – The biggest advantage of Invisalign is its clear appearance. You can easily remove them and put them back in place.
    • Cons – Invisalign is less effective in treating severe cases of misalignment and bite issues.  You also need to have new Invisalign braces fit every two weeks. So if you have a busy schedule, you may want to consider other options.

  • Are Metal Houston Braces Better Than Invisalign Clear Aligners?

Invisalign Clear Aligners are quickly becoming the go-to alternative for certain patients who would prefer this method over metal or ceramic Houston braces, but many others still prefer to rely on traditional metal braces. Because of this, does that mean metal dental braces are better than Invisalign?

Metal Braces Compared to Invisalign Clear Aligners

    Metal Braces

Metal Houston braces are the most traditional method for correcting a malocclusion. They are made up of brackets and wires and may involve rubber bands later in your treatment. Brackets are bonded to the teeth with a special dental-grade glue and then a wire is placed across the brackets in order to put pressure on the teeth so that they move toward their correct alignment, which we determine at your initial braces consultation.

Over the course of your treatment, our South Houston dentists will tighten your wires in order to continue to add subtle pressure, little by little. Eventually, you will have a beautiful, straight smile that you can feel confident in.

    Invisalign Clear Aligners

Invisalign is very different from traditional metal dental braces. First and foremost, Invisalign doesn’t utilize any wires or brackets. Instead, this Houston braces treatment utilizes clear plastic molded to your teeth in such a way that gradually improves their alignment. You will get a new set of clear plastic aligners every few weeks, each of which shifts your teeth a little more.

So, Do You Pick Metal Braces or Invisalign? Which is More Effective?

One isn’t necessarily more effective than the other. Both methods work, but they simply suit different patient cases.

Invisalign works best for those patients who have a mild malocclusion. Metal braces, on the other hand, are more versatile and work on virtually all kinds of cases–from mild and simple to severe and complex.

When it comes to maintenance, metal braces are easier to deal with because they are glued to your teeth, so you just need to make sure you brush and floss enough. With Invisalign Clear Aligners, though, you need to be careful to wear them as directed, remove them only when necessary, clean them properly, and make sure not to lose them. This extra level of discipline makes some of our South Houston patients more inclined to investing in metal braces instead.

Our South Houston Family Dentists at Centra Dental Will Help You Determine Which Orthodontic Appliance Works Best For You

With the varied options we offer for Houston braces treatment, we understand wanting to be sure of your investment regardless if you are an adult looking into braces or are doing some research for your kids. If braces are in the near future, please book an appointment with us. We will complete a consultation to help you determine if metal braces or Invisalign will work best for you.

  • Are Metal South Houston Braces Better Than Ceramic?

Metal braces used to be the only choice in correcting misaligned teeth. But now, ceramic braces have become just as popular. Both have their pros and cons in your dental treatment. Your South Houston dentist at Centra Dental will help you make an informed decision. At our clinic, we embrace your smiles. Our dental service specials aim to provide quality and affordable dentistry to children and adults. Not sure which South Houston braces to choose? Read on to know more about both types.

    Pros of Ceramic Braces

More and more adults are getting South Houston braces to fix crooked teeth and bite issues. They choose ceramic braces over metal ones because of appearance. South Houston ceramic braces are translucent in color. They are significantly less visible than metal braces. Ceramic braces are also more comfortable. A common complaint among those who wear metal braces is that the inside of their mouths get chafed. Since ceramic braces have no metal wires, this abrasiveness is reduced.

    Cons of Ceramic Braces

South Houston ceramic braces are not meant for extreme dental problems. They address mild to moderate cases. They may be less effective than metal ones if you are looking for dramatic changes. Our South Houston family dentist will assess if you will benefit more from ceramic braces. This type of South Houston braces may also be more pricey than traditional ones.

    Pros of Metal Braces

The main advantage of South Houston metal braces is their durability. They are meant to fix severe cases of misalignment and bite problems. Metal braces offer total control. They allow your South Houston dentist to fix minute details. This type is less likely to show discoloration. Ceramic braces may get stains from coffee and tea. Since metal braces come in a darker material, discoloration is less noticeable.

    Cons of Metal Braces

The downside of metal braces is that they are more likely to cause discomfort. The wires and brackets may irritate the inside of your mouth. This can be addressed by using dental wax. Metal braces are also more noticeable. They are immediately visible in person and photos. Metal braces may be harder to clean. Your dentist at Centra Dental will make sure to educate you on proper hygiene and maintenance of your metal braces.

Which Type of South Houston Braces Should You Choose?

The short answer is that it depends on your case. There are those who will benefit more from metal braces. For some, ceramic braces are the better option for them. Our top-rated dentist in South Houston will thoroughly examine your teeth to determine the best treatment for you. You’ll feel at ease at our clean and safe facility. We operate with surgically clean air around the clock. If you are choosing between the two options, don’t hesitate to book an appointment with us. We accept dental insurance plans. Contact us today!

  • Are You More Likely To Get Cavities With Houston Braces?

Are you at increased risk of tooth decay if you undergo Houston braces treatment? This is a common worry that many of our South Houston dentists patients experience when they are determining whether they should undergo dental braces treatment, and rightfully so. If you think about it, your dental braces are on the face of your tooth, so won’t you only brush a portion of each tooth? Although we can see why our patients worry about this, there are things you can do to remain free of cavities while wearing metal or ceramic Houston braces. Here are our South Houston family dentist’s tips for maintaining adequate dental hygiene while wearing Houston braces.

Brush Your Teeth After Every Meal And Snack

Brushing your teeth twice a day is good hygiene and the minimum we recommend. However, because metal braces and ceramic dental braces do tend to cover the teeth, this can make it a bit harder to get your teeth perfectly clean. To mitigate this, we recommend that you brush your teeth after every meal and snack, as this will discourage food particles from sticking around. By brushing with fluoride, non-whitening toothpaste, this will strengthen your enamel and serve as additional protection against tooth decay.

Keep Flossing Your Teeth Before Bed Every Night

For our South Houston braces patients and non-orthodontic patients alike, flossing is critical to maintaining a cavity-free smile. This is especially true for our Houston braces patients because food tends to get stuck between the teeth and the brackets. Flossing may seem hard at first, but our South Houston family dentists will be glad to teach you how to properly floss. In addition, brush picks also help in reducing food particles stuck between your teeth.

Get A Teeth Cleaning At Our South Houston Dentist Office

By visiting us for your teeth cleaning every 6 months, we can give you a deeper clean than you would get at home because no matter how diligent you are with your at-home hygiene routine, it is impossible to keep your teeth pristine without visiting your dentist. Please book an appointment for your next cleaning so we can polish the teeth, check your dental braces progress, and offer more tips on how to care for your teeth.

  • Back To Basics: Houston Braces For All

Over 4 million people in the U.S. wear some form of dental braces. In fact, 25% of these Americans are adults, which makes Houston braces suitable for everyone. Here are the basics of Houston braces to prepare you and/or your child for your future treatment.

Why Get Houston Braces In The First Place

Contrary to popular belief, Houston braces are not purely cosmetic. Undergoing dental braces treatment helps correct issues associated with a “bad bite” (malocclusion) such as an overbite or underbite, crowded teeth, or extra teeth. These conditions make it hard to practice good dental hygiene, may cause speech problems, and may even make it hard to chew and eat safely. The cosmetic appeal of straight teeth is simply a bonus that our patients get to enjoy.

    The Initial Houston Braces Consultation

Before getting Houston braces, you must first come into our South Houston family dentist office so we can examine your teeth and ask about any difficulties they may be causing you. With this consultation, we will be able to design a custom treatment plan, including what type of braces will work best and how long you should wear them. With our state-of-the-art technology, we are able to use 3D modeling to demonstrate how your teeth will shift throughout treatment.

    Types of Houston Braces

At our South Houston dentist office, we take pride in offering different kinds of braces that meet different needs. We offer Invisalign for mild cases, ceramic braces for moderate cases, and metal dental braces for severe cases. Which kind of dental braces we recommend will depend on your particular case.

    Paying For Houston Dental Braces

Because dental braces aren't strictly cosmetic, we believe they should be accessible to all, which is why we offer braces for as low as $99 a month. We are also in-network with several different insurance plans so healthy teeth don’t have to break the bank.

Our South Houston Family Dentists Look Forward To Embracing Your Smile

With our passion for healthy teeth and beautiful smiles, our South Houston dentist is proud to offer dental braces for children and adults. If you are considering getting dental braces, please book an appointment so we can begin with a consultation and evaluation. We look forward to welcoming you to our office and giving you a smile you can wear confidently.

  • Can You Get Invisalign Instead Of Ceramic Houston Braces?

At our Houston and South Houston family dentist offices, we offer a variety of Houston braces treatments: Invisalign, ceramic dental braces, and metal dental braces. In this article, we will discuss why many of our patients consider undergoing Invisalign treatment instead of ceramic Houston braces.

Benefits Of Undergoing Houston Braces Treatment

Houston braces, no matter what type you undergo treatment with, work wonders at straightening your teeth for a beautiful, healthier smile. Which type of Houston braces you wear will depend on your particular case as well as your needs.

    Why Patients Prefer Invisalign Treatment

Invisalign/Invisalign Clear Aligners are clear plastic trays that are specifically designed and fitted for your teeth. Here are some of the reasons why many of our Houston braces patients take a liking to Invisalign:

    Invisalign Is Virtually Unnoticeable

As its name suggests, the transparent nature of Invisalign Clear Aligners means that our Houston dentist patients get to enjoy a subtle treatment. While ceramic Houston braces are also subtle due to the fact that the color of the ceramic tends to blend into the teeth, Invisalign is certainly the subtlest option for Houston braces treatment.

    Invisalign Trays Are Removable

Ceramic dental braces are cemented to the teeth and can only be removed by our South Houston dentist, but Invisalign Clear Aligners can (and should) be removed by the patient at mealtimes. Further, if worn correctly, patients may skip their Invisalign for a special occasion.

Invisalign Is More Comfortable Than Ceramic Dental Braces

Although today’s dental braces are far thinner and lighter than they once were, the fact remains that ceramic dental braces utilize metal wires, whereas Invisalign doesn’t, creating an overall more comfortable experience.

Our South Houston Family Dentist Can Help Determine Whether Invisalign Or Ceramic Houston Braces Are Better For You

There are many advantages of undergoing Invisalign treatment, but ceramic braces also provide fantastic results. Keep in mind that Invisalign works best on very mild cases, whereas ceramic Houston braces work best for moderate cases due to the additional strength of the ceramic. If you think it might be time for dental braces and you want to find out which is best for you, please book an appointment with our Houston family dentist so we can begin with a Houston braces consultation. We will assess your bite, needs, and preferences so we can recommend the best dental braces option for you. We look forward to embracing your smile!

  • Caring For Your Teeth After Houston Braces

Having braces must have felt like an eternity, but once you get them removed you will see just how worth it those two or three years were. However, for many years to come, you have to keep your teeth looking as beautiful as they did the day you got your braces removed. This will ensure that your investment was worth it and that you can properly enjoy your new smile. Here are ways our South Houston dentists recommend you take care of your teeth following the removal of your dental braces.

    Wear Your Retainer

This is the most important thing you can–and must–do after you’ve completed your Houston braces treatment. None of our patients like to hear this, but upon completion of your treatment, you must wear another orthodontic appliance known as a dental retainer.

For adults who wore dental braces, their teeth will tend to shift back to their original position, causing their malocclusion to come back since there are no more wires or brackets to hold your teeth in place. For kids who wore braces, they still have some growing to do and so do their jaws, which means their teeth will also shift again. Retainers are designed to prevent this.

Our South Houston dentist often recommends our patients wear their retainers all day and night, except for when it’s time to eat and when it’s time to brush your teeth and floss, for about a year after they got their braces off. This extra time will ensure your teeth fully settle into the soft tissue in your mouth so they won’t shift again. Once the year is up, we may instruct you to wear your retainer at night time only.

Keep Up a Good Daily Cleaning Routine

Now that your teeth are straight, we’re certain you would like to show off your new smile more and more. To keep it looking pristine, we recommend the following:

    • Brush your teeth at least twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Also make sure to replace your brush every few months, once it looks frayed.
    • Floss every night to ensure nothing is stuck between your teeth. This will be even easier now that you don’t have any brackets or wires in the way.
    • Use a fluoridated mouthwash to offer extra protection against cavities while also strengthening your enamel and freshening your breath.
    • Clean your retainer every day before you put it on again when it’s time to go to bed. This will ensure that it is always clean and that there are no bacteria that will get stuck on or behind your teeth.

Centra Dental in South Houston Wants to Give You Your Best Smile

By wearing your retainer as directed, practicing exceptional dental hygiene every day, and coming in for your semiannual routine dental cleanings, you are on your way to a beautiful, healthy smile for life. Now that it’s a new year, please book an appointment with us so we can clean your teeth and answer any more questions you may have about dental care after Houston braces treatment.

  • Ceramic Houston Braces Versus Metal Dental Braces

When any of our South Houston family dentist patients have a malocclusion, which is an improper bite that leads to other health concerns, we will recommend either Invisalign Clear Aligners, metal dental braces, or ceramic dental braces. In this blog post, we will discuss the difference between ceramic dental braces and metal Houston braces, which will give you a good idea of what you can expect with either treatment.

    Ceramic Houston Braces

Ceramic dental braces are less common than metal dental braces, but they remain highly effective. When it comes to ceramic braces, they are made up of the following components, which make them blend into the teeth to create a subtler Houston braces treatment:

    • Tooth-colored brackets, or, in some cases, clear brackets. Both of these options are placed on the face of your teeth.
    • The archwire, which is placed over the brackets and ranges in color from silver, white, or frosted.

When Are Ceramic Houston Braces Recommended To Our South Houston Dentist Patients?

Because the ceramic material itself is strong, dental braces work wonders on patients with mild to moderate malocclusions, though how long treatment lasts will also depend on the severity of each individual case.

    Metal Houston Braces

Metal dental braces are the most common type of Houston braces treatment we offer. These braces are similar to ceramic braces and contain the following:

    • Metal brackets placed on the front of your teeth
    • Metal, dark gray archwire, which is also placed along the front of the brackets

When Does Our South Houston Family Dentist Recommend Metal Dental Braces?

Metal dental braces are the most common type of Houston braces treatment because they are versatile, meaning they work for virtually all cases–from extremely mild to highly complex. Depending on our patients’ different cases, treatment may also last longer because metal brackets are stronger than ceramic brackets and will, therefore, be a quicker way to straighten your teeth.

Affordable Ceramic And Metal Dental Braces At Our South Houston Family Dentist

Whether you are considering Houston braces for yourself or for your child, Centra Dental in South Houston is the best place to get affordable braces, starting as low as $99 a month. If you would like to determine which method is best for you, then please book an appointment with us so we can begin with your Houston braces evaluation!

  • Ceramic South Houston Braces versus Metal Braces Ceramic Braces from your South Houston Dentist

Dental braces are used by your South Houston Dentist to align and straighten teeth primarily to correct a patient’s bite to treat conditions such as crowded teeth, underbite, overbite, and other jaw and teeth alignment issues. However, Houston braces can also be used to aesthetically improve a patient’s smile. Here in Centra Dental, we take pride in fostering open communication with our patients so we can educate them on how to best take care of their teeth. In this article, our South Houston family dentist will discuss the differences between ceramic braces and metal braces so that our patients can decide for themselves which is best suited for their needs.

    Traditional South Houston Metal Braces

Metal dental braces are an effective and affordable way of correcting even the most severe of bite issues. Traditional Houston braces are composed of three parts: metal brackets, metal wire, and elastic ties. Metal brackets are glued by your South Houston Dentist to your front teeth with dental cement. An elastic tie anchors each metal bracket to the arch wire. The constant pressure coming from the interaction of the metal brackets and the arch wire slowly moves the teeth to the desired position.

    Ceramic South Houston Braces

Ceramic dental braces function pretty much like a traditional metal brace but have gained some advancements in subtlety. We all know that traditional South Houston metal braces are quite noticeable because of its heft and dark gray metal color. Ceramic braces are recommended by your South Houston family dentist to patients who want a more discreet dental brace. Ceramic dental braces use tooth-colored ceramic brackets that blend with your teeth. These ceramic brackets are also designed to attach with the arch wire directly thus removing the need for elastic ties. Ceramic Houston braces also use an arch wire but it is usually lightly colored (silver or frosted) which further decreases its visibility.

Pros and Cons: Metal Braces vs Ceramic South Houston Dentist

Here in Centra Dental, we believe that everyone deserves to have a smile they are proud to wear. That is why we offer a variety of dental braces that our patients can choose from based on their needs and budget. In the list below, our South Houston Dentist will evaluate both metal and ceramic braces on different categories:

    • Cost - Traditional metal braces are more affordable than ceramic South Houston braces.
    • Aesthetically pleasing - Ceramic braces are less noticeable than metal dental braces and as such are preferred by patients who put a premium on visual appearance.
    • Major bite issues - Traditional metal braces are sturdier than ceramic dental braces and and as such are recommended for correcting major teeth and jaw alignment issues. While ceramic braces are suitable for most patients, extreme cases where major movements of the teeth are involved would require dental braces.

Work with your Trusted South Houston Dentist for a Stress-Free Experience

One of our priorities here in Centra Dental is ensuring a pleasant and stress-free experience for the whole family. The facility has free wi-fi and family-friendly movies are being shown in the lobby and examination rooms so mom and dad can relax while their kids are being treated. • Correct Overbites With Metal Dental Braces At Our South Houston Dentist

It’s no secret that Houston braces are a great idea if you need to have a malocclusion corrected. A malocclusion is also known as a “bad bite” and the term is used to describe any and all orthodontic problems. In our previous dental braces blog, we discussed a bad bite caused by crowded teeth. This time, we will discuss overbites and how Houston braces can correct them.

    What Is An Overbite

An overbite, more commonly called buck teeth in non-dental jargon, occurs when a patient’s upper teeth and jaw protrude further outward than their bottom teeth and jaw do. Some overlap from your upper dental arch over your bottom dental arch is normal and healthy, as this overlap protects your teeth from abnormal wear of the enamel, and protecting the enamel increases your protection against tooth decay. Overbites may be caused by a number of factors, some of which cannot be controlled and others that are simply poor habits. These factors include:

    • Genetics
    • Extensive thumb sucking
    • Excessive use of pacifiers
    • Pushing your lower teeth with your tongue

What Health Problems Can An Overbite Cause?

Although some jaw overlap is healthy, it is easy for it to become unhealthy. An overbite can cause certain speech impediments, much like other malocclusions. Overbites have also been known to cause chewing difficulties, and many patients with overbites end up biting their tongues or cheeks a lot by accident. Over time, this may cause your teeth to exhibit worn enamel early on. Lastly, an overbite tends to cause damage to the gums and other teeth because of the improper bite pattern, which results in tooth decay and even gum disease in severe cases.

Affordable Houston Braces at Centra Dental Your Go-To South Houston Dentist

Straight teeth are not merely cosmetic; they are crucial for your overall dental health. If you suspect you or your child has an overbite or “buck teeth”, then please book an appointment with our South Houston dentist so we can schedule a Houston braces consultation. At this consultation, our South Houston dentist will evaluate the bite and develop an affordable Houston braces treatment plan. We look forward to embracing your smile!

  • Crowded Teeth? Your Child Might Need Houston Braces

Dental braces, though dreaded by some, are the best way to correct issues relating to the way your teeth are aligned. At Centra Dental in South Houston, we offer multiple Houston braces options and treatment plans, each designed to correct the alignment of the teeth. Why, though, may dental braces be needed besides improving your smile? Take crowded teeth, for example. If your child’s teeth exhibit crowding, they may very likely need dental braces. Here’s why.

    Crowded Teeth In Children

Teeth crowding occurs when your child’s teeth are crooked and tend to overlap one another. This can occur on the upper row of teeth, the bottom row of teeth, or both arches at the same time. What makes teeth crowd? Sometimes, excessive thumb sucking or chewing toys and other items excessively may lead to crowding. Other times, some of our South Houston family dentist’s patients simply have extra teeth, which don't fit in the mouth properly. This is a major cause of crowding, as it disrupts the natural way in which the teeth are supposed to emerge along the dental arch.

What Problems Can Teeth Crowding Cause?

One of the worst dental health problems caused by crowded teeth is excessive plaque build-up. Although some patients who don't have extra teeth can still experience heavy plaque build-up, children who do have extra teeth are especially prone to this because it's too difficult to adequately brush and floss the teeth. Excessive plaque build-up leads to cavities and even gum disease if left untreated. Severe crowding could also cause speed problems, difficulty at school, and difficulty in your child’s social confidence.

Affordable Houston Braces at Centra Dental in South Houston

Teeth crowding is one of the most common issues that require Houston braces. Not only do our affordable dental braces bring out the best in your child’s smile, but they also help your child achieve optimal dental health and a confident smile. If your child has reached the age at which you may consider Houston braces treatment, please book an appointment with us so we can begin with a consultation and design a custom treatment plan. We look forward to embracing your child’s smile!

  • Dental Cleaning With Braces by a South Houston Dentist

A common question that clients ask us is: should they get a dental cleaning with braces? The answer is yes! In fact, it’s even more important to get regular cleanings from a South Houston Dentist if you have braces. Bacteria and dirt can get trapped in the brackets and wires. Our top-rated dentist performs vital dental services, such as teeth cleaning. We embrace your smiles. We love to see happy clients after a good dental cleaning. Read on to know more about what you can expect from the procedure.

The Importance of Getting Your Teeth Cleaned With Braces

Houston braces can last for a while, usually between 6 months to 2 years—or more. During this time, plaque can build up around your brackets. This leaves unsightly white stains. They are also harmful to your overall oral health. Plaque and tartar like to hide near the brace mount and under the wires. If they are not removed, you could end up with cavities. Our helpful and caring staff will make sure that your dental cleaning is as pleasant and stress-free as possible.

How Many Times a Year Should You Get a Cleaning?

As it could get hard to give yourself a thorough cleaning with brushing alone, make sure to visit our clinic regularly. We offer a clean and safe environment to ensure the protection of our patients and staff. We recommend coming in for a cleaning every 6 months if you have Houston braces. Some patients may require more or less, depending on certain factors. Our South Houston dentist will assess your case to advise you on how often you should get a cleaning.

The Difference Between a Regular Cleaning

Our clients ask us if their cleaning with braces will be any different from a regular one. Generally, both involve the same steps. However, it may take longer for our South Houston dentist to clean your teeth if you have braces. They need to make sure that every bracket and wire is free from dirt. Don’t worry though, it will only be a bit longer than the regular procedure.

  • Different Types of Houston Braces at Our South Houston Family Dentist office

In Houston, braces are quickly becoming a necessity for many reasons. The standard metal dental braces for kids are no longer the only way the consumer views braces. Style and timeline for utilization has changed with the times. At Centra Dental we value quality in the treatment planning, attachment of actual braces, and the process of creating your most beautiful and functional smile. Dr. Nguyen and Dr. Perschke are innovative and thoughtful practitioners that put patients so they can have the perfect smile. In this article, our South Houston dentists will explain the different types of affordable Houston braces we offer.

Metal Dental Braces Are What's Hot in the Houston Dental Braces Game

Just like candy, there are many styles of available braces for our clients. At Centra dental we are as skilled at attaching metal dental braces on as well as Invisalign, and Ceramic dental braces. The Snickers of the Houston dental braces world is metal dental braces. In the past you might be called a “brace-face", but now a patient is lucky enough to accessorize colors with rubber bands to be in the height of schoolyard fashion. This is the traditional view of dental braces that shows up in your mind, but we assure you, times have changed.

It’s Never Too Late to Use Houston Invisalign Braces to Build Confidence

Invisalign is more of the sour patch kid of the bunch, they are newer compared to metal bracket braces, but they are great for a responsible adult who wants to mold their professional image without advertising their braces. At Centra Dental, we use state-of-the-art technology to make perfectly fitting digital imprints to help mold your smile for beauty, and maybe a touch of confidence that might be all you need to take the next step professionally. Invisalign braces utilize adjustments just like metal bracket braces but do allow for some provided relief since the braces are removable. Just like sour patch kids don’t melt in your hands, Invisalign dental braces offer convenience to the client that other braces systems can’t.

Ceramic Dental Braces Are Less Noticeable And Can’t Be Lost

Ceramic dental braces are less noticeable than metal braces. They are the M&Ms of the Houston brace’s world the melt in your mouth and not in your hands. They offer a less noticeable style then metal braces. That is the convenience, but they are attached. You get a more subtle process and look than metal braces but can’t lose them like Invisalign braces. Houston dental braces can be gotten in this fashion or the metal braces and Invisalign styles at Centra Dental.

  • Dispelling Houston Invisalign Myths

Invisalign has been growing in popularity over the last several years, especially for adults who prefer a subtle Houston braces treatment to correct the alignment of their teeth. Unfortunately, despite its growing popularity some of our patients at our Houston and South Houston family dentist offices still question how well Invisalign works. In this article, we will debunk 3 common myths and misconceptions that patients have about Invisalign Houston braces.

Invisalign Takes A Lot Longer To Correct A Malocclusion Than Regular Houston Braces Do

Because Invisalign Clear Aligners are made of plastic, they are mistakenly seen as a less effective method of correcting a malocclusion–the term we use to describe a poorly aligned bite–than metal Houston braces or ceramic Houston braces. In reality, Invisalign treatment lasts about 12-18 months on average, just like ceramic and metal dental braces treatments. However, much like our other Houston braces, how severe your malocclusion is and how well you maintain health and hygiene during braces treatment will affect how long your treatment lasts.

Invisalign-Like Clear Aligners Bought Online Are Also Effective And Much More Affordable

Within recent years, online businesses that claim to offer custom clear aligners if you simply submit some photos of your teeth have begun to emerge. They are marketed as cheap and effective in the comfort of your home, but their cheap pricing and lack of in-person orthodontic appointments spell trouble for people who buy into them. Photos are not enough to design an entire Invisalign (or any Houston braces) treatment. When we prepare you for Houston braces treatment at our Houston and South Houston dentist offices, we gather impressions and x-rays as well. Photos will simply never be enough to get a close look at the anatomy of your mouth, which means the aligners you receive will not provide accurate, effective treatment or results.

    Everyone Can Undergo Invisalign Treatment

Although Invisalign is a good alternative to metal and ceramic Houston braces for both teenagers and adults, not every case may do well with Invisalign. If a patient’s particular case is extremely complicated, Invisalign may not work as effectively, so they should invest in one of the other forms of Houston braces treatment we offer at our Houston and South Houston dentist offices.

Outstanding Invisalign Treatment At Our Houston And South Houston Dentist Offices

At Centra Dental in Houston and South Houston, we are proud to offer outstanding Invisalign treatment for various malocclusions. Now that we have debunked these myths and misconceptions, please book an appointment with our Houston and South Houston dentists if you are considering Houston braces treatment. • Do All Houston Braces Patients Have To Wear Rubber Bands?

You may have seen ceramic and metal dental braces patients wearing rubber bands at some point during the course of their treatment. If you or your child is about to undergo Houston braces treatment at one of our family dentist offices in Houston and South Houston, then you might be wondering if you (or your child) will also have to wear rubber bands. In this article, we will answer this question while also explaining the importance of rubber bands.

What Are Rubber Bands Used For

Rubber bands are primarily used as a way to correct your bite, specifically if you have an overbite or an underbite. These rubber bands apply additional pressure to your jaw in order to guide it to the right placement in a more accelerated manner than your braces would without rubber bands.

Wearing Rubber Bands With Your Dental Braces

Because rubber bands accelerate the correction of your malocclusion, getting to this phase in your Houston braces treatment is a pretty big, exciting deal! They are a major milestone in your overall treatment, but not everyone has to wear rubber bands. Typically, if our Houston braces patients don’t have an overbite or underbite, but do experience crowding in their teeth, then they may not need rubber bands. However, they are still an option that we will recommend based on each individual patient case.

Similar to wearing retainers after braces, it is critical to the success of your treatment that you wear your rubber bands as directed if you want to complete your braces treatment on time (or, in some cases, earlier!). Most of the time, our South Houston family dentists recommend you wear your rubber bands at least 10-12 hours a day, but in some cases, we recommend wearing them for 24 hours except for when you’re eating, brushing your teeth, and flossing. It isn’t rare for patients to begin wearing bands 24/7 and then switch to just a few hours a day.

Our Houston Family Dentists Will Recommend Rubber Bands If Your Treatment Requires It

If you’re about to undergo braces treatment, or if you are curious about if/when you might need rubber bands, then please book an appointment with us so we can perform a teeth cleaning before your dental benefits expire and evaluate your bite before making a recommendation. We can’t wait to embrace your smile!

  • Do All Houston Braces Patients Need Rubber Bands?

Houston braces can be a cumbersome and uncomfortable experience. While our staff at Centra Dental try our utmost to ensure that your visits and treatments with us are as pleasant and stress-free as possible, the truth is that rubber bands may be a necessary part of a patient’s treatment. It makes sense that patients with braces would like to minimize the number of parts and components in their mouth that they need to take care of and clean. That’s why one of the most common questions asked by Houston braces patients of their South Houston family dentist is whether or not they need rubber bands, also sometimes called elastics, installed on their braces. The short answer is: It depends.

Why Do Houston Braces Have Rubber Bands Anyway?

Houston braces work through the firm and constant application of pressure on your teeth and jaw to correct misalignments, straighten crooked teeth, and resolve tooth crowding issues. Most of the work is done through wires and brackets, but sometimes, these are not enough. Your South Houston dentist must resort to adding strategically located rubber bands among your braces in order to add a little more force and pressure in the right direction. This additional hardware is understandably a source of discomfort and inconvenience to patients, as these rubber bands can make eating more difficult and make cleaning their braces more complicated. However, South Houston pediatric dentistry experts say that the discomfort from braces and rubber bands tends to go away within 2-3 days, and while cleaning braces will always be tedious, they will teach patients to better clean and care for their teeth.

When Are Rubber Bands Not Needed With Houston Braces

In general, rubber bands are employed in Houston braces to correct misaligned jaw conditions such as overbite, underbite, open bite, and crossbite. If you do not suffer from any of these conditions, you may not need rubber bands at all on your braces. Additionally, even in the case that you do need rubber bands installed on your braces, your Houston family dentist may determine that they only need to be part of your treatment for only a few months of the one to two years of the total time that you are wearing braces.

  • Do Houston Braces Hurt? A woman smiling with braces

Braces have been around for decades and have helped millions of people achieve better smiles. Not only do they straighten crooked teeth, but they also improve oral health. Houston braces correct overcrowding, gaps, underbites, and overbites. They also promote better digestion and prevent dental caries. Both teens and adults can get Houston dental braces. But many wonder if this orthodontic treatment hurts. Centra Dental is committed to making your dental experience as stress-free and pleasant as possible.

    During Your Visit

A week or two before getting braces, our Houston dentist may apply spacers between your molars. You might feel slight pressure and soreness in the first few days. The discomfort will eventually go away. During the actual application of Houston braces, our dentist will clean your teeth with a solution that tastes a bit sour. They will also apply glue to put the brackets in place. These steps do not cause pain. The dentist will then mount brackets onto your teeth and connect them with a wire. You will feel a gentle pressure a few hours after your visit.

2 to 3 Days After Your Visit

Dental braces work by slowly pulling teeth into alignment. As such, you will feel discomfort throughout the week after your visit. This is a sign that your treatment is working. Your gums and teeth will feel sore. You may have difficulty chewing solid food for the first few days. There will also be times when the brackets and wires scrape against the inside of your cheeks. This is normal as long as everything is in place.

    A Week After Your Visit

You will notice the discomfort gradually decreasing as the days pass. After a week, you may not feel any pain at all. Our Houston family dentist may advise you to come in for monthly visits. During your visits, they will tighten the wires and springs, and may put bandsto keep the treatment going. Expect tolerable discomfort after your visits. This means that you are achieving progress and well on your way to your treatment goals.

    Tips on Managing Discomfort

Discomfort from dental braces is perfectly normal and manageable. For pain relief, you may take over-the-counter medication, such as ibuprofen. Only take this if you don’t have an allergy. You may also rinse with salt water to lessen the soreness of the gums. If you’re getting cuts from the metal, you can apply dental wax. Place them on the trouble spots to remove the friction.

  • Do Houston Braces Permanently Straighten Your Teeth?

Most patients who undergo dental braces treatment mistakenly believe that once the braces are off, there’s nothing else to do besides show off that new smile for the rest of their life. You can get to that point, but only when some extra measures are taken.

Remember That Your Teeth Can Still Shift After Houston Braces Treatment Is Complete

Dental braces–whether in the form of metal dental braces, ceramic braces, or Invisalign–work because they are constantly applying pressure to your teeth and pushing them in the direction they need to go in order to become straight. When your dental braces come off, your teeth no longer have that pressure guiding them, which means they can shift and undo all the work your investment did.

Aside from natural shifting, there are some situations that can otherwise contribute to your teeth becoming crooked again, such as:

    • Teeth grinding
      • A condition in which many of our South Houston family dentist patients may grind their teeth or clench them tightly. Over time, this will cause your teeth to become crooked again. Some retainers help prevent this, but otherwise, a nightguard can help as well.
    • Wisdom Teeth
      • Wisdom tooth removal is very common these days. Wisdom teeth are extra teeth that a patient may have which, if not removed, will start to crowd the teeth and force their way above the gum line, which will push all your other teeth in different directions.

Protect Your Teeth After Houston Braces

In order to make certain the time and money you invested in wearing Houston braces wasn’t all for naught, we ask that you wear orthodontic retainers. Usually, we will recommend our South Houston family dentist patients wear retainers 24/7 for about a year, with the exception of meal times and brushing your teeth. This is because it takes roughly a year for your teeth to settle into the soft tissues in your mouth. By settling into the tissues of your mouth, this will help your teeth preserve their new alignment.

Different Retainers For Different South Houston Braces Patients

At our South Houston family dentist office, we know that every patient and every bite is different. Depending on your particular case, we may recommend bonded retainers, traditional wire retainers, or transparent plastic orthodontic retainers. If you are nearing the end of your Houston braces treatment, please book an appointment with us so we can get you fitted for a retainer that will keep your smile straight and healthy.
